Once upon a time the Village of New Boston was home to Millbrook Park... Millbrook Park was a popular leisure site throughout the area's history… People would go there for picnics, theater performances, dancing at its pavilion, riding on its merry-go-round, taking a boat ride, playing baseball, or other activities... Today the area is still utilized as a park and includes ball fields, picnic facilities, a playground, a community gazebo and an extensive walking trail…
Historic Millbrook Park drew crowds from across the country…Built in 1902, the park included the first ever side friction coaster…Built by Ingersoll, it was the tallest one in the world at that time... It was approximately 60 feet high and was a modified version of the typical figure-8 layout… A trolley station was located near the entrance of the park that brought visitors annually to this nationally recognized park that was state of the art for that time period…
Millbrook was a beautiful place, and an ideal setting for a park, but like so many others locations, being that close to the river proved fatal... The coaster survived a couple floods, but the one in 1913 damaged it beyond repair and it was never reopened due to the cost involved… The park itself found an end when the great Ohio flood of 1937 wiped out everything along its banks, combined with the growing steel industry that took over the park property…
Mural pictures along the Portsmouth floodwall depict what Millbrook Park looked like at the height of it’s glory…It was a simpler time of life when people took time to enjoy life…Step back to once upon a time and enjoy what Millbrook Park is today…
