Geocachers in this portion of the South Mountain Reservation have commented on the
public access to Spring Water in the Locust Grove Picnic area. Historically, Spring Water from South Mountain has been thought to have restorative properties. It is not unusual to see people filling jugs with the water from the pipe for their personal use. Considering the source and course of the stream it probably has great nutritional value.
I have it on good authority that Spring Water with large quantities of dead insects and small mammals, mixed with the excreta of creatures both large and small, although disgusting at first blush, provides all the essential nutrients needed by your typical beetle.
Humans on the other hand, gotta be nuts to drink it!
The Water pipe is close to parking at Locust Grove:
N 40° 43.662 - W 074° 18.243
This is a quick and easy cache best done in conjunction with any of the other caches in this part of the Reservation.
The cache is an easily found Ammo Can hidden approximately 200' past the spring pipe. The spring is on your left as you walk down the path. The CACHE contains:
- FTF Token
- Several Cache Specific Geotokens
- Spring Water Contents
- Log Book and Pencils
This is a heavy use area-STEALTH REQUIRED! Please RE-HIDE well.
