A "John Masser Memorial" Geocache . . . Placed in early 2007 by the late Banksia777, this is a modest geocache in a nice corner the beautiful Blue Mountains! You won't run into too many other walkers while chasing down this one, and you'll enjoy a lovely bushland area.
The 'Bruce's Walk' track (leading to my naming the cache for the late John Masser) basically follows the obvious high voltage power lines. It runs between Wentworth Falls and Bullaburra via Lawson View Road. From the end of road it's approximately 1 kilometre along fire trails to the finish at Bullaburra's Booth Street. This is a narrow and, at times, slippery trail, and quite steep in places. It zigzags its way up and down three valleys. It’s not really a difficult track as such, but is still a challenging effort and not really suitable for young children. However, you can reach the geocache from the end of the Booth Street fire trail after only a 100 metre walk, and this route should be suitable for children, if normal care is taken. Banksia777 notes: "As always, be careful. A responsible approach is to stay on the track and look after our fragile Blue Mountains environment." Anyhow, it’s a pleasant walk and there’s a great variety of bush, creeks, some magnificent blue gums and tree ferns en route. If you want to walk the entire distance (which isn't at all necessary in order to find the geocache), the entire 'Bruce's Walk' track is approximately nine kilometres long, from Wentworth Falls railway station to the Bullaburra railway station and it can take 3-4 hours to complete. (Banksia777 lived in Lawson for years and walked the trail many times in both directions.) By far the easiest approach to GZ is via the end of Booth Street, Bullaburra, through the gate, and along a short section of fire trail. The track proper starts between a set of power poles heading west. The cache is actually less than 100 metres from here and is hidden only a few metres off the track. Through not a drive-by, this is a cache that doesn't require much of a trek. (The track is marked with yellow tape & small metal squares nailed to trees along the way.) Banksia777 suggests, "After your find, why not take the track from the cache’s location down to the creek [about 10-15 minutes away], where you could have lunch or a snack or just listen to nature? It's a really cool spot on a warm day, and great for listening to nature." (But remember that the local water is not fit for drinking!) Hope you have a great time searching for this hide! And thanks again to our departed friend Banksia777 . . .
