Geocache Description:

McKendree Chapel and Cemetery are located near Stout, Ohio in Nile Township. The cemetery is in excellent condition, well maintained and easily accessed. This cemetery is located on both sides of US 52, with the older section beside the church and the newer and larger section on the West Side of US 52. The cemetery is still in use today.

The cemetery is named after the McKendree Chapel which was the birthplace of Methodist Churches in Scioto County. William McKendree (1757-1835) served in the Revolutionary War then traveled with Bishop Francis Asbury as a Methodist Church Circuit Rider through the Northwest Territory, including Ohio and Kentucky. Asbury was America’s first Methodist Bishop sent from England in 1771 by John Wesley. He and a handful of evangelists such as McKendree formed the grassroots of all Methodist Churches in this area in the early 1800’s, meeting at the home of Phillip Moore, the founder of Alexandria that later became Portsmouth. McKendree was elected Bishop of the church in 1808 and died in 1835. The McKendree Methodist Church here is no longer in use but is a beautiful chapel along the Ohio River that shines as an example of a day gone by.

Interred in McKendree Cemetery are many of the area’s first pioneers, including the Stouts. The community nearby bears their namesake. Markers in the older section of the cemetery list birthdates in the 1700’s and early 1800’s. Soldiers from several wars are buried here, including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korea, and Vietnam. In the newer section lies later generations of the area’s early settlers. To the pioneers and those who served their country, we say thanks for your courage, wisdom and foresight that made our country the great land it is today.

You will have to visit both sections of the cemetery to get credit for this multi-cache. The coordinate listed above will take you to the first hide located by the church in the old section. Open it up and write down the coordinates to the second hide across US 52 in the new section. The first hide is along the perimeter of the cemetery. It is a camouflaged small pill bottle with coordinates for the second cache only. The second cache is a camouflaged medium sized plastic container. Bring a pen to sign the log.
