There were thirteen so called Pendle Witches Alison Elizabeth and James Device, Chattox, Anne Redfern, Alice Nutter, Kathrine Hewitt, John and Jane Bulcock and Isobel Robey they were all tried and hung at Lancaster Gaol in August 1612 Elisabeth Southern ( Demdike ) died whilst in Gaol waiting trial Jenet Preston was tried and hung in York.Finally Margret Pearson was found guilty of witch craft but not of murder and was sentenced to 1 year in prison
Ordeal by Swimming was one of the ways of dealing with witches it was grafically discribed in The Lancashire Witches by Harrison Ainsworth, in it he says
Nancy Redfern grand daughter of Old Mother Chattox was condemnd and taken to a place on the river Calder about 50 yards above the weir place in the middle of the river bound and then left to see if she would sink or swim it it was the latter she was undeniable a witch.
The cache is laid as close to the place discribed as possible
