INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #534

"A Friendly Place"

This quest will take you to the Sugar Grove Meetinghouse and Cemetery just southwest of Plainfield. This Friends church was founded in 1823 by Quakers who moved to central Indiana from North Carolina. The building present today was built in 1851. There was a mass migration of southern Quakers to the Midwest as they elected to move away from states that supported slavery. The church is now inactive, but services were held here for well over 100 years. The building and cemetery were added to the National Registry of Historic Places in September of 2000. The building is in remarkable condition and you may look in the windows for a nice view inside. As you peek inside you will notice the wood partitions that can be lowered to divide the meeting room in half. This allowed for separate services to be held for men and women, which was the custom at the time this church was built. There are a large number of pioneer graves in the cemetery, but unfortunately, 90% of them are unreadable.

Few Veterans

As is typical of a Friends cemetery, there are very few graves with notations of military service. I was able to locate one Civil War veteran and three WW II veterans. The headstone for August Stone looks relatively new. He was an officer with the 79th Indiana Infantry. The 79th saw action in several major battles including Perryville, Stones River, Chicamauga, and then the Atlanta campaign.

FIND LOGS ON THIS CACHE THAT INDICATE NIGHT CACHING WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT NOTICE!!

The cache container is a peanut butter jar. I had a lot of difficulty getting an accurate read from the GPSr, so please post coordinates if you find mine are off by a significant amount. You MUST sign the log to claim a Smilie. If you cache at night, or don't sign the log, or reveal the additional hint in your log, or don't fulfill any additional requirements, your find log will be deleted without notice...If you think these terms to be unfair, don't bother to hunt this cache. The cache is not located near a grave... If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground.

None genuine without this official SixDogTeam seal. Photographs taken by Lead Dog, (C) 2006 by RikSu Outfitters, unless otherwise noted.
