Pioneer Furnace is located in a remote area off Brady Creek Road, approximately 2 miles west of SR 93… There is a point where the road begins to bear left and there is a pond on the right when you are coming from SR 93...The furnace is on the opposite side of the reclamation pond north of the road…
The area has been stripped for coal and other minerals... The hide is on property that has been reclaimed by an environmental public works agency for public use…After years of stripmining, the area has been returned for wildlife habitat again…A reclamation site pond was constructed in the enrivonmental work here…
To view the furnace up close is a Level 3.0 to 3.5 hike…The cache is located about 100’ from your parking location…
Pioneer furnace is not particularly unique compared to other sites… The front of the furnace has fallen in and the top of the inner liner is barely visible… The furnace has one side tuyere and one rear tuyere…Reserachers say an interesting feature of the Pioneer Furance is the marks in the brickwork… It is not clear if these marks were associated with the construction of the furnace or if they were related to some ironwork…
Pioneer Furnace stack was 45’ tall…It was one of the first furnaces in the area to utilize stone coal to fuel the hot blast… The furnace stack is still standing but is in average condition…
The Ohio Iron Furnace Web Site had up close pictures of the iron works…We have added pictures of the perspective of the iron works from across the reclamation pond so you can see how far the hike would be…If you look closely you can see the furnace remains off in the distance…
Pioneer Furnace remains are about all that does remain of what is now just a historical locale known as Pioneer Furnace…Yet, birth and death certificates and marriage licenses list Pioneer Furnace as populated at a time when the furnaces were in operation…Visit and step back in time to the early day of the industrial age…
Cache is a camouflaged large pill bottle with a log book…Bring a pen…
