SHIRYAEVO / ШИРЯЕВО

Shiryaevo was founded in early 1640s and until 1917 had different names - Shiryaevo, Shiryaevka, Shiryaevskoe or Bogoyavlenskoe after the local church.
During the 17th and 18th century the agriculture was the main occupation of the population. At the end of the 18th century, A.D.Volkonskiy - Shiryaevo owner, has started the limestone mining. Stones and alabaster were also mined and two big production factories were built. The limestone from Shiryaevo region was of very good quality and thanks to its age (300 000 000 years) it is not rare to find fossilised shells of sea animals.
In 1870, one of the most famous Russian painters, Ilya Repin, rented a house with his friends in order to study the life on Volga. His stay in Shiryaevo led him to the creation of "Barge Haulers on the Volga" which became one of his most famous paintings.
The job of haulers was to pull the boats upstream. Each hauler had a 20cm wide leather strap which was put around his chest and shoulders to pull the boat. It is believed that in the 19th century about 600 000 haulers were working on Volga.
In 1880, Russian famous poet, Aleksandr Vasil'yevich Abramov, was born in Shiryaevo. He was writing under the pen name Shiryaevets which means "from Shiryaevo".
Nowadays, you can visit the old limestone mines and also the house rented by Repin and his friends. It hosts the Repin's museum and displays the life in the 19th and 20th century and explains the history and traditions of the region. You can also see some of the Repin's reproductions as well as find out more about Abramov-Shiryaevets.

В 17-ом и 18-ом веке сельское хозяйство было основным занятием населения. В конце 18-го века, A.Д. Волконский - владелец Ширяева, начал добычу известняка. Камни и алебастр также добывались и две большие производственные заводы были построены. Известняк из Ширяева был очень хорошего качества, и благодаря его возрасту (300 000 000 лет) не редко можно найти окаменевшие раковины морских животных.
В 1870 году один из самых известных русских художников, Илья Репин, арендовал дом со своими друзьями, чтобы писать жизнь на Волге. Его пребывание в Ширяеве привели его к созданию картины «Бурлаки на Волге», которая стала одной из его самых известных картин.
