Located at the Lake Erie Center of the University of Toledo.
This fairly new facility has quickly become one of the finest research stations on the Great Lakes. It has 12 individual laboratory bays for different researchers to use, as well as a large instrumentation lab. These bays have been routinely filled with scientists from not only UT, but BGSU, Heidelberg and many other universities. This is one of the only research stations on the lakes to have a wet lab, where water is pumped in from Lake Erie. This is so research may continue year-round inside the facility using the actual water from the lake. Also housed here is a fine satellite imagery facility. The classroom wing contains state of the art teaching facilities.
The research that is done here is concentrated in the Western Basin of Lake Erie, which is the most productive area for fish spawning and growth in all of the Great Lakes. Because of it’s shallow depth though, the Western Basin is also one of the more fragile ecosystems in the lakes. Until this station was built, little research had been done in the area. The station itself is open to the public on most days, as it is a school. There are nice posters inside explaining the research that is ongoing. The cache is available any time.
