This cache is not far from a once popular rock-climbing area. There is a free-standing "pinnacle" (Chimney Rock) about 400' away from the cache that has seen at least two Tyrolean Traverses back to the main cliff. You can still see a 1/2" bolt on it's south side. (Don't ask how I know it's there) The "pinnacle" is at N41°25.838 W072°53.388. From here, a series of small cairns leads NE past "Devil's Chute", the Keyhole cache and "Deadman's Cave".
Why is it called Deadman's Cave? See the story on page 51 HERE
While the more popular trails in this park follow the ridges and offer views of the New Haven skyline, I've always enjoyed walking along the base of the cliffs. Not seeing New Haven in the distance, I can imagine myself anywhere. I chose this place to bring you to the less visited GREEN trail and Deadman's Cave.
Container is a black match container. No special equipment is required to retrieve this cache. However, some rock scrambling will be required. Spelunking is not required. You do not have to go "inside" the cave to find this cache. (Although, after finding the cache, it would be a cool thing to do) Snow or wet conditions will significantly increase the terrain rating, but the finding difficulty should remain the same. Pets may not do well in the last 200 feet to the cache, depending on the way you chose to go. The cache is NOT at the top of the cliff
Parking is available by the Ranger Station (seasonal fee from Memorial Day - Labor Day ), at the co-ordinates below or on Mt. Carmel Ave opposite Quinnipiac University (weekends only) Note: Free parking is available at places listed below
Congratulations to Snowball's-Keepers and TheWilkens for FTF and not getting eaten by the vultures. And congratulations to Katy for finding this cache in 15 minutes flat!
