Carol Martin's
Memorial Cache
This cache was placed as a loving memorial of our mother / grandmother, Carol (Knapp) Martin, who was killed on October 5, 2006, while vacationing on the Oregon Coast with our father / grandfather.
Carol was born in 1931, in Coeur d’Alene, to Lisle and Vivian Knapp. She attended Winton Elementary School in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and lived a few blocks east of the school, and this cache site, at 514 W. Linden Avenue. The school is still in use today and this cache is located in the wooded city park behind the school. She told stories about how during WWII the she and the other children had to wear ID tags (dog tags similar to our TB tags) and they had to do regular air raid drills, where they would crawl underneath their desks. She went onto attend Coeur d’Alene High School, which at the time was located on 7th Street, graduating in 1950.
She worked at Montgomery Wards in Coeur d’Alene, was a home-maker after marring dad/papa,and went onto working at Borah Elementary School in 1978, originally as a playground aide for the first year, followed by 13 years as a school cook. She retired from Borah in 1992.
She and our dad/papa had been avid square-dancers since 1988, joining the Activ-8-ers, the Coeurly-Qs, the Thunderbirds, and the Cactus Dodgers. They joined the Jacks and Jennys in 1992, and cherished the lifelong friendships they had formed while square-dancing.

Traveling and camping were my her favorite activities, spending many summers at Round Lake and later at Big Hank campground on the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River. She and dad/papa visited the Oregon Coast every September since 1996. After dad/papa's retirement in 2001, they became “snowbirds,” traveling every winter to Arizona, making many more cherished friends along the way.
Some of her favorite hobbies were reading, sewing, and feeding the many birds that visited their home and travel sites. She also collected dolls for several years. She had been a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church since 1959, and was active in many women’s groups at Christ the King over the years. In addition to her love for our Lord, she was very proud to be a Coeur d’Alene native and an American. She was very patriotic, always having one or more American flags displayed at her home and RV. Her proudest moments were the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.
Thank you for taking the time to keep the memory of our mother and grandmother alive!! To find this cache you will be looking for a large OD green ammo can. It was hidden pretty well, to hopefully prevent mugglers from finding it. Please be sure to re-hide it just as good, so it doesn't walk off with a muggler. Good luck, happy caching, and God Bless you. Martin 5. J, K, N, and T.
UPDATE 11/09/07: The ammo can was muggled sometime after it was last found in early October 2007. It was replaced today with a 6oz tupper ware container. Hopefully this one will withstand the muggles. Please, please, be sure to rehide the container well and thus help prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. Thank you. Martin 5.
