Geocache Description:

You will find the monument about 2 km from the N1 going towards town. Turnoff to the monument ( dirt rd) about 1 km from the N1, follow the dirt road to the locked gates, go to the right and follow the road for +- 75m. A pity that the monument is closed to the public, but can be seen from a distance.

The settlement of this culminated in the proclaiming of the first Voortrekker town in the Free State (named to 'win a dispute). Winburg acted as an outpost, a religious centre and is now a mixed-farming town and crucial railway link.

Small note on cache maintenance: Please take note that although the owner of this cache stays some distance from the cache, special arrangements have been made to maintain the cache, should it be necessary. Fellow cachers, friends and family in the vicinity will do the honours. Cache placements in South Africa are minimal related to the number of cachers playing the treasure hunt game especially in the Garden Route area. We will be placing at least 30 caches during this December 2006 holiday season – so watch this space.
