Fungus Tree Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

AndeeC: Checked on this cache on 26/12/13. There has been a lot of tree cutting going on and unfortunately the Fungus Tree is half its original size. Unsurprisingly the cache is gone. Signs in the area say major restoration works going on along the footpath here. Archiving as another cache may not last long here.

Geocache Description:

The Fungus Tree is located about 1km north-west of the village of Lanercost in Cumbria and along part of Hadrian's wall footpath. Paths are muddy tracks over fields and bridleways.

Parking can be found in a layby near to the bridge over the river Irthing just south of Lanercost. There are a couple of ways to get to the cache which are evident on the relevant OS map. The easiest way is to walk north along the road from the car park and as the road bends to the right past the Abbey take the Bridleway straight ahead. Follow the bridleway round to the left and follow this as it passes by Abbey Gills Wood on your right until you reach the Hadrian's wall path. Head west and go across the small wooden bridge. Look out for a tree with clusters of fungus on it's roots. The cache is a 35mm film canister wrapped in a black plastic bag, and contains a small pencil and paper for logging visits.
