Not Another Rock Wall Micro in the Woods
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is a plastic Lock and Lock container located in a Multiple Use Area known locally as the 909 Tyrell, area has multiple mile long stretches of single tracks connected by carriage trails as well as a fire road. It is used for snowmobiling in the winter and bike riding most other months.
This cache is located at the Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Area which is just off of the Taconic State Parkway on the Northbound side, it can be accessed from either direction however. Best parking for this cache is at the end of Tyrell Rd (the signs will say Dead End) N41.44.801 W073.45.621. This parking is for cars only though. If you park here and walk a short ways down the road, on the right-hand side will be what looks like a white blazed trail (in fact they are snowmobiling blazes that were formerly red but have been bleached white by the sun), this can be the start of your hike. This cache is a Bike or Hike Cache (or even Snowmobiling) on mostly level terrain. The 909 is popular during hunting season though so be careful and wear Blaze Orange should you visit between Oct and Dec.
This cache can be done as a loop with the Fort Tyrell cache. These caches have been placed here in an effort to bring more people to this extensive, but cache-poor area, that was crying out for more than just one cache. There are other caches available here including Tyrell, Fort Tyrell and Here For D Cache. This particular cache is located on fairly level ground, with no need for bushwhacking. Once you reach ground zero cache is located not far off of trail. There is also a FTF pin in the cache.
This hike will bring you past a little stream, and at one point you will be close enough to hear the traffic on the Taconic, and if the leaves are down you might even see some of that traffic! If there have been recent rain some parts of the trail may be muddy. The trails for this cache are not blazed except for red "snowmobiling" blazes.
After you find the cache continue on past the termite mounds and when you reach the stream cross over the little bridge. At the fork in the path if you take the left hand side it will bring you back out to intersect the trail near Fort Tyrell's initial coordinates and eventually back out to the fire road, wherein you can continue off in search of Tyrell and Here For D Cache should you so desire.
Please be sure to use care when getting the cache and putting it back.
