Geocache Description:

Easy walk 'n' cache along the beach at Boulmer.

This cache has nothing to do with the television luvvies that swamped Boulmer and Craster for the filming of the ITV series Distant Shores in 2004/5. Instead it highlights a much older period in Boulmer's history and its association with the sea.

The Leading Light (at night or Leading Line by day) is a seafarer's navigation tool used to guide boats through narrow passages into harbours.

It consists of two 'marks' which, when aligned, indicate the safe passage. They are particularly vital at Boulmer as there is only one small passage through the rocks into the natural harbour and they are awash (not visible) at high tide. Incidentally, if you come at low tide, you can search for lobsters, crabs, shrimps and shellfish in those rocks - we've made some intersting (and tasty!) discoveries in the past.

Boulmer has a long history, dating back to at least 1300. However, its most famous (and notorious) period was in the 18th century when it was a major smuggling haven. Whisky, gin, tobacco and salt were the main commodities. The smugglers came from all over the Scottish Borders and even established a long-distance path to the Cheviots to move their contraband more quietly - their headquarters were at the Fishing Boat Inn (known locally as the 'Feeby') in Boulmer, which still serves a nice pint today!

(Un)Fortunately smuggling is much harder than it used to be... but Boulmer has maintained its link with the sea in the form of fishing - the local catch is sea-salmon, lobster and crab - you can see the boats along the beach.

Now to the cache (I'll spare you the maths of actually working out how far off track you are if the lights don't line up) it is a small container with room for small swaps, but please try and keep them vaguely nautical... if you have nothing suitable a nice shell will suffice, there are plenty about!

Parking is in the car park nearby or, if you don't fancy the walk (about 1/2 mile round trip) you can drive up the track to within 100m of the cache.
