Geocache Description:

The pride of downtown Bismarck in 1901 was the new Spanish Mission style Northern Pacific Passenger Depot.

When the Dakota Territory was divided and North and South Dakota entered the Union in 1889, Bismarck became the capitol of North Dakota. As the town developed politically, new buildings went up, including schools, churches, and frame houses to replace sod shanties.

By 1890, 43 percent of the population was foreign-born, and mostly comprised of Russians, Germans, Norwegians, Canadians, English, Irish, and Swedes. In 1898 the Northern Pacific freight depot caught fire; the fire spread and destroyed most of downtown Bismarck. However, citizens rallied and the town was quickly rebuilt.

The North Coast Limited was a famous passenger train operated by the Northern Pacific Railway between Chicago and Seattle via Bismarck, North Dakota. It commenced service on April 29, 1900, served briefly as a Burlington Northern train after the merger on March 2, 1970 and ceased operation the day before Amtrak began service (April 30, 1971) You can see one of the actual engines (Old #2164) that pulled the North Coast Limited just down the street (west on Main Ave.) at Camp Hancock.

After you're done soaking up your Bismarck history, you can start your hunt for the cache. It's not exactly your everyday micro-cache container, so keep an open mind when looking for this one. It should be a very easy find, as it's pretty much out in the open. As is usually the case downtown, muggles may be present.

You will need to BYOP (bring your own pen).
