The
Dromore Railway Viaduct is fine example of Victorian Engineering,
built in 1860 for the Banbridge, Lisburn & Belfast Railway. The
Viaduct with its seven wide brick build arches were used to carry
the branch railway line above the River Lagan. The last train
crossed the River Lagan at Dromore in April 1956 and the viaduct is
today closed to the general public.
The cache is found in the public Park opposite to
Dromore High School on the Banbridge Road. There are many entrances
to the park, but parking is limited. If you have the time use one
the free public car parks adjacent to the town centre and take in
views of the “Stocks” beside the Town Hall and the Stone Cross in
the grounds of Dromore Cathedral. When in the town, why not stretch
your legs and walk up to “
The Mound” and take in the town’s other cache.
GPS reception can be poor in this area due to
tree cover, hence the increased difficulty. Over the first few
months the co-ordinates will be refined to provide a more accurate
location, currently 10m estimated accuracy.
