Geocache Description:

You can drive up to within just a few hundred feet of this cache. Once parked it is an easy walk to the cache site - you will have to do just a bit of bushwaching the final hundred feet.

I grew up a mile south of here just behind West Sioux Hardware in an area called West Sioux. Those were the days before cable and satellite TV, video games, iPods, basically all that stuff. Summers were spent outside usually down by the river or at the swimming pool. The only thing that restricted our travels was how far we could ride our bikes. Thats where this story starts.

One of our favorite things to do was ride our bikes down to the river dike and then north to where this cache is hidden. We would take our shoes off and wade around in the water hazard near hole #5 of the golf course rounding up golf balls that we would sell to the golfers. We always noticed how many striped gophers there were running around the gold course. So we formulated a plan......

One day we retrieved an old wire birdcage that we had in the basement, grabbed some heavey leather gloves and a five gallon pail.....then headed back to our favorite spot (by the cache). We chased a striped gopher down a hole on the golf course and then put our foot over the hole. The other guy took the five gallon pail and went over to the river and got a pail of water. We got down on our hands and knees, one guy would pour the water down the hole and the other guy, with the leather glove on his hand would position his hand over the hole and wait for the drowning gopher to come out. We would grad the little varmit and stick him in the wire birdgage. You a can't believe how good it worked. We must have caught at least thirty or forty of them......

That's were things went a bit array. We loaded up our gear onto our bikes and headed home, yes, with a birdcage full of gophers. When we got home mom and dad had a fit...... "What the heck are you going to do with those things?" Took care of them we did. We took them out into the back yard and let them go!!!!! Boy, was my dad mad then. Both of my parents have passed away and we sold the house that we grew up in a half dozen years ago. The new friends that we brought home that day back in the early 60's are still there......
