Clawhammer Length: 1.1 miles - Time to complete: 3 hours

Clawhammer was the third of the "Hammer" trails built is considered the baby of the Hammers and is arguably the easiest trail in the Valley. Generally speaking, a mildly equipped, short-wheelbase vehicle with a small lift and 33-inch-or-larger tires can make it through with few problems, and it’s passable for fullsize rigs. There isn’t much risk of body damage, and it’s a good warm-up for first-timers. Clawhammer is the shortest trail in the valley (a medium-sized group can make it back to camp by early afternoon), but a recently added small upper canyon increases the opportunity for fun. Clawhammer starts out with a rough, rocky climb and then settles down to more moderate obstacles. There is a steep right turn over a ledge to be scaled about halfway up the canyon. The ledge can be a bit loose and stubborn. Once over the ledge, it is more rock crawling until the last two hundred or so yards of the trail. Here the character changes a bit as the trail is becomes loose and traction can be hard to find in the powdery dirt and loose rock. Second gear is useful in several spots to get enough wheel speed to reach to the top of the hill. The trail ends in of a small saddle with the exit route from Wrecking Ball coming down from the right. Follow the trail straight ahead to exit down into the valley below.
