Geocache Description:

This is a simple two part multi cache starting in the grounds of Pembroke Lodge, Richmond Park with great views - some unexpected! We can recommend combining your visit with lunch on the terrace where you can enjoy more spectacular views.

Park at N 51 26.566 W 000 17.582 where there are also WC’s and refreshments available. Parking is free (or was when we last checked1). Note: Richmond Park is accessible from dawn to dusk depending on the time of year. Notices are posted on the entrance gates. Pembroke Lodge may close earlier - check the opening times. Access is not possible when the gates to the Lodge are locked Find King Henry’s Mound at N 51 26.700 W 000 17.682 where you will find the information required to decode the final co-ordinates for the cache location. (1) Windsor Castle is A3.5 miles from here (2) Runnymede is 1B miles from here (3) Strawberry Hill is 1.C miles away (4) James Thomson wrote “The Seasons” in 1DED (5) St Paul’s Cathedral is 1F miles away The final location is: N CA.B(C+A).(D+A)(C-A)C W FFF.A(D+A).(A+B)B(D+A) The cache location is outside of the park area and can be reached on foot through nearby Petersham Park (accessible via a gate close to King Henry's Mound) via proper footpaths for most of the way and crossing one busy main road. If you have children with you they will enjoy the playground in Petersham Park en-route. Note: The final cache location is outside of Richmond & Petersham Parks because it is not permitted to put Geocaches in Royal Parks However, it is a very pleasant walk of about one mile in each direction to the cache, although a steep descent outbound and climb on the return. After finding the cache, we recommend you continue along the path a short distance which will bring you to the River Thames towpath with good views of Richmond and boat traffic. King Henry's Mound is accessible on flat and level tarmac paths and ramps. Access to Petersham Park from Pembroke Lodge is via a short flight of steps. The final cache location is accessible via a a flat and level unmade path. There is street parking nearby for those wishing to drive rather than walk to the final cache location. We have given the difficulty rating of 1.5 because in winter the area can flood, and although it is rare for water to get as high up as the cache, the paths can get muddy. Note for wheelchair/mobility scooter users: The route to the final cache location through Petersham Meadow is not suitable for wheelchairs or mobility scooters because of stairs, steepness and unmade paths, but it is possible to drive to within 100m. Wheelchair users can get to within a few metres of the cache on paths but may need assistance retrieving it when conditions are muddy.
