Geocache Description:

This is my first cache. The location holds a special memory for me and as the name indicates I placed it as a tribute. Cache is a standard match container hidden in plain site. No writing implement is included so bring one with you.
*****************************************************************

In the dark days and weeks after Hurricane Katrina, it was very difficult to find anything to smile about in New Orleans. Luckily, for my own sanity, a few weeks after the storm I did run across something that not only made me smile but also made me laugh out loud for the first time since the storm

While making our way through the abandoned, flooded streets of Lakeview, my partner and I ran across a group of Tennessee National Guard soldiers near the intersection of Robert E. Lee and Lakeshore Dr. which was still under water.

The Guardsmen were laughing and feeding a group of gnarly looking ducks the remains of their MRE lunches and the ducks were eagerly chowing down.

We got out and talked with the guardsmen who told us that they had been posted there for a few days and that the ducks had gotten used to eating their MREs every day. After wishing the guardsmen good luck, thanking them for their help and snapping a couple pics, my partner and I jumped back in the vehicle with a newly rediscovered smile on our faces and begun winding our way through the abandoned flooded streets once again.

Thanks for the laugh when I needed it ducks.

As a tribute to those gastronomically challenged birds, I placed this, my first cache very near to where we met the MRE eating ducks. While looking for it, look around you can still see the high water mark on many things. The area was hit hard by the breached canal nearby but it is slowly coming back.

Take a look at the pics to see what the area looked like on that day.

Depending on the day and the time, there could be many muggles around or hardly any. Be discreet. Please place it back exactly as it was.

Due to the lack of electricity in the area, I would avoid doing this cache after dark.

Cache was inspired by and thanks goes out to the great Cachers of the New Orleans area including Bamboozle, Mausdad, 30/90, Short Circuit 2, Big Doggy, Sabahar, Gatorgirl and others. Hope to meet you all in the near future.

There are several cool caches nearby by these fine folks.
