Laguna Beach Overlook
This cache is across from a parking area just off of Highway One
and Laguna Road along the Pacific coast.
(The picture from the overlook in the cache description is "just a
bit" of a hike away from the cache. I can't tell you how far
because I lost my GPS shortly after placing the cache. (Though I
did find it again ....))
Laguna Beach is part of the storied Coast Dairies property near
Davenport that officially became part of the California State Parks
system in 2006. The 407 acres ceded to the park service offers
"scenery and resources that have elicited a sense of connection to
the land for many generations of residents and visitors," according
to a state report.
The Coast Dairies property is bordered on the south by the
4,000-acre Wilder Ranch State Park, and on the north by the
3,200-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch. In all, Coast Dairies boasts five
miles of coastline, six creeks and seven beaches.
Eight years of negotiations put the 407-acre coastal stretch
between Scott Creek and Four Mile Beach in the hands of the state
this summer, a gift from the nonprofit Trust for Public Land. It's
one of the largest additions of public beaches in decades, but it's
just the beginning.
Early next year, the trust will hand over the roughly 5,700-acre
inland portion of Coast Dairies to the federal Bureau of Land
Management.
The Trust for Public Land didn't make any improvements to the
land after acquiring it in 1998. So the trails on the property are
often like the coastline: rough and, at times, treacherous.
If you go down to the beach, be sure to bring your digital
camera and post some pictures!
Enjoy! And happy caching!

Due to repeated muggling, this is the third time I have replaced
this cache, hopefully in a spot that won't get muggled.
