When northbound from Fairbanks on the Steese Highway, follow the
signs for Chatanika and Circle and turn right at the weigh station.
It's then another 10.5 miles up the Pedro Creek Valley (site of the
gold strike that started the rush to this part of the interior) to
Cleary Summit at an elevation of 2233 feet. Turn right onto Fish
Creek Road and admire the views from the wide pullout on the north
side of the road.
After finding the cache, continue on Fish Creek Road to access
some of Cav Scout's caches in the area (Rubicon Trail and Gold
Valley) and the viewpoint for the Fort Knox Gold Mine. If you like
to downhill ski, bring your boards and give Skiland a try.
We almost incorporated this cache into our "Bike Path" series
since this is a popular hill climb for road bikers, but Daddy
Ladybug hasn't felt up to tackling the climb for a couple of years.
Maybe it's time for him to ditch the 11x21 cluster for something
better suited for his increasing age and weight. If you do ride a
bike to this cache, please report the chainring and rear cog you
used to climb the steepest pitch. Riders oftentimes ride over the
summit from Fairbanks, refuel and fill water bottles at the
Chatanika Lodge and return for the thrill of a 45+ mph descent on
good pavement with a couple of fun curves.
There is an unactivated Nut Geocoin in the cache for the FTF.
The Motogrrl Memorial Geocoin is meant to travel far and wide.
Happy New
Year!!!
