Geocache Description:

The Ile de l'Archer cache is located on Squam Lakes Association land. You'll need a boat when the lake's not frozen. Information on access to the lake can be found here.

This is a companion cache to my first cache ever, Ile de la Lune. I'm not sure at this juncture for whom this island was named, but l'archer (dude with a bow) was a much shorter translation than the perhaps more apt l'homme à la proue (dude in the bow).

I was hoping to find an amazing place to create an amazing hide, but I didn't find one, so settle for a cool view spot with a mysterious structure and a winter-friendly hide that I hope will survive the storms. I'll not encrypt a hint on this one, and just state it outright: it's not in the wall, and it's on the shore. And it's a bison tube with brown duct tape on it, best accessed from the rock. So find it. And don't go tromping all over the place. It's on the shore side of the trail.

Right at this moment, it contains a geocoin, a set of unactivated TB tags, and a few other little goodies. Please try to leave the container in the same place and position that you find it. (Assuming it's still well positioned.)

Again, I bring you the SLA creed, in the spirit of which I place this cache:
The Squam Lakes Association (SLA) is dedicated to conserving for the public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and unique resource values of the lakes and surrounding area. In cooperation with local and state authorities and other conservation organizations, the Association promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region. Since 1904 the Squam Lakes Association has worked to preserve the character of the Squam Lakes.

p.s. If you're not out here camping, or if this is your first time to the area, take the time to walk the trail. Sunset Ledge (on the other side of the island) and the shore below the caretaker's cabin (right nearby) are both especially granite-statedly stunning.

p.p.s. In trying to find a better name for this cache that probably could have had a better hide, I discovered (in searching "lune" and "archer" together) that there may be symbolism in the name of the character of Bowman in 2001: A Space Odyssey (which begins with the finding of an artifact on the MOON), in that his murder of one-[camera]-eyed HAL was similar to that of Ulysses, great bowman that he was, of the cyclops Polyphemus. I promise this has nothing to do with the cache. I just enjoy useless trivia.
