V 18. storočí začala výstavba Bratislavy prerastať aj za vonkajšie mestské opevnenie. Mestská aglomerácia sa rozšírila o vonkajšie pásmo predmestí, ktoré vyrástlo na pôde vtedy využívanej na poľnohospodárske účely.

V dobových archívoch sa uvádza, že do roku 1770 sa na blumentálskom predmestí nenachádzal žiadny kostol. Všetky kostoly a kláštory, vtedajšie strediská duchovnej kultúry, sa nachádzali v centre Bratislavy. Tunajšie obyvateľstvo bolo duchovne zanedbané, preto sa na podnet Márie Terézie v roku 1769 predstavitelia štátneho, mestského a cirkevného života dohodli, že predmestie potrebuje nezávislého farára s kostolom. Dnešný blumentálsky kostol je už tretí v poradí. Je to novorománska trojloďová bazilika postavená v rokoch 1885 – 1888.

Neďaleko kostola boli pochovaní sovietski vojaci, ktorí padli pri oslobodzovaní mesta. Juhozápadne od oploteného podstavca súsošia svätého Floriána nájdete pamätnú tabuľu poľného cintorína. Je na nej uvedený jediný číselný údaj v tvare BCDE.

In the 18th century, the expansion of Bratislava began to outgrow its outer city walls. The urban agglomeration expanded to include an outer zone of suburbs, built on land previously used for agriculture.

Historical archives state that until 1770, there was no church in the Blumental suburb. All churches and monasteries, the centers of spiritual culture at the time, were located in the historical center of Bratislava. The local population was spiritually neglected, so at the initiative of Maria Theresa in 1769, state, municipal, and church representatives agreed that the suburb needed an independent priest and a church. Today's Blumental Church is the third in succession. It is a Neo-Romanesque three-aisle basilica built between 1885 and 1888.
