I was driving by and this beautiful structure caught my eye. I
stopped to take a look and got to chat with some of Whitman's
finest about the structure.
The memorial arch was erected in 1926 after an April 4, 1925
town meeting set aside $6,500 to build a memorial to commemorate
Whitman’s war dead from World War I. Last year, the arch was the
subject some controversy over a proposed plan to move the arch to a
more visible location such as Whitman Town Park. The plan was later
scrapped, and the arch still stands next to the fire
station.
