La Storia
XII sec., l’entroterra di Savona è dominato da tre famiglie: quelle dei Clavesana e dei Lengueglia, discendenti entrambe dalla dinastia longobarda degli Arduini, e quella dei Del Carretto che possiedono anche la zona di Finale. 1248, il 4 aprile viene fondato Zuccarello con atto sottoscritto dai marchesi di Clavesana da una parte e dalla popolazione della Val Neva dall’altra, nel castello alla presenza del notaio Martino; in cambio di protezione, gli abitanti della valle si impegnano a fornire la manodopera per costruire il nuovo borgo entro il Natale 1249; l'atto di fondazione è conservato presso l'archivio storico del Comune.
1326-35, Caterina di Clavesana sposa Enrico II Del Carretto di Finale, portando Zuccarello in dote ai Del Carretto. 1397, grazie a un accordo tra i fratelli di Enrico II, diventa primo marchese di Zuccarello Carlo I Del Carretto; sua figlia Ilaria sposa nel 1403 Paolo Guinigi, signore di Lucca, da cui ha due figli, Ladislao nel 1404, e Ilaria Minor l’8 dicembre 1405, generando la quale, Ilaria muore per le complicazioni del parto: il marito fa scolpire a Jacopo della Quercia il celebre sarcofago posto nel duomo di Lucca; intanto Carlo I espande il territorio del marchesato acquistando castelli tra cui quello di Rocca Barbena nel 1420; come vassallo della Repubblica di Genova si trova spesso in conflitto col Comune di Alberga.
1545, il marchesato è diviso tra Zuccarello, che va a Giovanni Bartolomeo, e Pirro II che ottiene Balestrino; nel 1561 Scipione Del Carretto cede un terzo del feudo a Genova e i restanti due terzi ai Savoia. 1625, la contesa tra i Savoia e Genova finisce in una guerra, detta proprio “di Zuccarella”, o “guerra del sale”, che finisce con il riscatto dei restanti due terzi del feudo da parte dei Genovesi, i quali si vedono così riconosciuta la signoria sul castello.
Però nel 1815, Zuccarello entra a far parte del Regno di Sardegna.

But in 1815, Zuccarello enters the Kingdom of Sardinia.
