Lonely Miller's Isle Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

thebruce0: Due to the rarity of my ability to maintain this one on a schedule, and also the natural sensitivity of the island to human activity, I'm going to retire this listing. My heart-felt thanks to those who've visited and I truly hope you've enjoyed the location and the lake!

Geocache Description:

A lonely little island in the middle of Miller Lake... Some call it "snake island"...

Poor little island... sitting out in the middle of Miller Lake, surrounded by cottages and campgrounds all year round, but next to no visitors or friends :(. A sad story, really. But amazingly, it's made a new friend! A geocache! In the hopes of attracting new visitors - families, children, nature lovin' camp-folk - there is now a small container hidden on the island.

Now, this island goes through a LOT of weather out there all alone... The original hiding spot was made in winter, and didn't make it when summer hit. It was then replaced with a more seasonal container, downgraded from a small to a micro (unfortunately), but still fun to find.

I'm hoping this will remain hidden in a way that's all-season friendly. I'll also re-visit the hide whenever I visit Miller Lake and ensure it's still alive and kicking.

NOTE: This is a seasonal cache. Local cottagers have asked that it be disabled in early spring months due to the regular nesting of loons. Consequently, I'll be disabling the cache yearly from April 1st to Canada Day, July 1st. Please don't scrounge for the cache between those dates.

This is a fun little canoe trip in calm waters, but can be quite an adventure if it's windy or the waters are choppy. The first time I canoed here during a windy day from a nearby camp I frequent to the west, it took me 3 times as long to paddle back, and took 10 times the energy! I learned a lesson about this island and its surrounding currents that day :)

There is a public access lot at the nearby cache GCYC9W "It's Miller Time" (however the lot # is part of a puzzle, so if you want to launch for this one from there, this is a good opportunity to nab that cache in the process!) The lot is located at N45 06.751, W81 22.877

Winter: The island gets a lot of wind and snow with drifts covering the vast majority of the ground in the area. Its one big tree manages to stand tall like a beacon. Find it, and you shall find your reward nearby! If you dare to cross the ice, proceed with caution, of course.

The cache was initially a heavy duty lock'n'lock containing a few little items, but it didn't last long after winter due to how it was hidden. It's now a quaint little film canister. :)
Fun for people of all ages, enjoy!
