Geocache Description:

The East Lothian town of Tranent has it's history steeped in coal mining. It is believed by some to have been host to the first industrial coal mining in Great Britain when the Lord of Tranent gave over lands to the monks of Newbattle Abbey in the 13th century.

Heugh (definition)
n.1.A crag; a cliff; a glen with overhanging sides.
2.A shaft in a coal pit; a hollow in a quarry.
It would appear that The Heugh in Tranent meets both definitions. A part natural, part man-made feature - the site of ancient mine workings, there is evidence that mining in East Lothian can be traced back up to 2000 years. It is a steep sided glen running from Bridge Street down to Meadowmill. The Heugh would also form part of the route taken by the Tranent to Cockenzie Wagonway - the first railway in Scotland - transporting coal from Fleets Colliery to Cockenzie Harbour. These days the Heugh is still used regularly by walkers, joggers, dog walkers and horse riders. The route can still be walked almost uninterrupted all the way to Cockenzie Harbour. The route passes through Meadowmill, now occupied by Meadowmill Sports Centre, Bowling Club and playing fields which was once the Bankton Colliery, the large pyramid-styled hill is a bing/overburden that is now used as a view point of the Battle of Prestonpans battlefield and until recently had a dry ski-slope on the southern side.
