Double Cross Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ROTSIP: No response from the owner.
This cache appears to be gone. As there has been no cache to find for months, and it seems unlikely that it will be replaced soon, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.
If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email, quoting the GC number), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.
Thanks for the past fun.

Geocache Description:

The highest point accessible in Heidelberg, marked by a huge illuminated cross. Terrain is rocky and one can drive with normal vehicle to within 30 meters form the cache. SO terrain is fairly easy and to find the cache as well. Be care when turning over rocks for snakes and other creatures and insects

The Small town of Heidelberg, which you will have a superb view of when you find this cache, was the first Capital of the old Transvaal. It was established as a trading post due to two major traveling routes crossing here. The little town has since evolved into a farming community, and has boomed with the discovery of gold in the area. Most of the gold has been mined and only smaller mines are left near the nabouring town Nigel. Several bigger industries have also popped up around Heidelberg.
This Cache is hidden in the one of the higher points in the area, and the hill or “koppie” is part of the Suikerbosrand range, with the Suikerbosrand nature reserve covering the biggest portion of this range. The hill is known as “The Cross” or “Kruis” in Afrikaans due to an illuminated cross erected on the hill, overlooking Heidelberg and shining at night. Everyone, including passers-by on the N3 are able to see the cross during the day and at night.

When looking at the splendid view, one can see the big white factory on the other side of town. This is the biggest cigarrete factory in Africa and produces close to 150 million cigarettes per day. IT was built and established by the famous Rupert Family. Just to the left of this big factory is one of the biggest pork factories in South Africa and most of South African pork products are made here.

To the left of the town is a big army base camp, and this camp specialised in training of several army disciplines.

To the far right, almost on the horizon one can see dark brown streaks and land. This is in fact cattle contained in the biggest cattle farm in the Southern Hemisphere hosting more than a 120 000 head of cattle at any one given time. Most of South Africa’s beef products are supplied form this farm.
Most of the people living in Heidelberg work in Johannesburg. The reason for his is that Heidelberg is only 50km away, which provides people with a country style living experience while they are in the corporate world within 30min. It’s a typical small town with everyone knowing everyone else.

This cache was established to share this awesome view and some of the interesting Facts of Heidelberg, nestled in the hills of the Suikerbosrand.
To access to the cache , there is a small dirt road entering through an open gate next to the main road running past Heidelberg, Follow this road past the water reservoirs all the way up the hill. Due to the view and tranquillity on the hill lots of people visit the site to admire the view or to pray. So muggle activity is possible. The hiding place of the cache is however not in open site to the most travelled route for the general public. Do be careful of snakes and when turning over of rocks when looking for the cache. It is a nature reserve so animals have right of way.
Hope you enjoy the view and our little town Heidelberg just as much as we do.
