How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This cache is only one part of the South Bro Certified Challenge Certificate-level Challenge and is the first of FIVE of our local geocaching TAFE “subjects” in qualifying for your South Bro Certified Certificate.

The Challenge is to be able to prove in your FOUND log, that you have previously found FIVE of the seven possible different cache SIZES within a 6 month period. (And don't forget to get the code from the cache stash note.)

A ‘short' but strenuous 'walk' up the north side of South Brother from Entrance Exam will get you to this cache at the posted coordinates. However to be able to claim the find, you will first need to achieve the Challenge!

If also attempting “South Bro Certified Challenge” PLEASE be aware of the need to complete each of the core subjects: 101, SIZE; 102, TYPES of caches; 103 DIFFICULTY of caches; 104, TERRAIN of caches; and 105, DISTANCE (and Matrix), to gain your FIND for that.

The usual bushwalking precautions apply here as there is no formed track. Bring a friend, a big stick, insect repellent (ticks and leeches), and maybe even a machete if you plan on going further up.

You may be able to find this cache and get back to your car (once you have completed the size requirements) in under an hour, however to progress and find the other caches to qualify for the Certificate Challenge, you will need to allow a MINIMUM of FOUR hours, but, probably SIX hours is more realistic. Don’t rush back downhill; there are many sticks and vines to trip over, and loose rocks to turn the ankle. I recommend you take a couple of litres of water each, and a First Aid kit. (There is insect repellent here, and there will be ‘Band aids’ in the other caches: years later that is questionable).

Now for the ‘Fine Print’.

1/ Only caches found in Geocaching.com are to be included.

2/ The FIVE caches logged for this Challenge cache are for their container SIZE, and you have a choice from: Micro, Small, Regular, Large, Not Chosen, Other, and the Virtual. The Five MUST have been found within a SIX MONTH time frame – see 3/ for a time extension exception. Counting is in whole months, any six CONSECUTIVE months.

3/ Exception: for long-term cachers who may have difficulty in having found the 5 different sizes in any previous 6 consecutive month period, you may ‘apply’ for an extension for the time frame, where one month, for each year of caching AFTER the first TWO whole years will be allowed. The Application for Extension (a Note to the cache page) needs to pre-date the date of the find. (Yes, you're back at geocaching TAFE).

4/ Caches submitted for this cache cannot be used again for the other “South Bro …” Unknown subject cache Challenges.

5/ The Size of the container is determined by the published container size – not the size of the container you actually find, nor the type of cache you find. So, Earthcaches, Events, Webcam, CITOs, Wherigo… it doesn’t matter, it is the published “Container size” that counts towards your tally.

6/ If you have completed the requirements of a Schoolies Challenge (for example) cache you will be able to choose which TWO Subjects you want to claim an exemption from, for having to list your qualifying caches, for the completion of the South Bro Certified Certificate Challenge. Please give the code for the Schoolies cache you have been able to complete and date logged. You will recognise that there is a lot of similarity between the geocaching educational systems, but TAFE is a little bit different.

7/ When you have found this cache and are logging it, to verify that you have qualified for this Challenge, you MUST include the FIVE GCxxxxx numbers you are claiming, the Size, and the Date found. An option is to make an appropriate Public Bookmark, and give the link in your log.

I encourage cachers who are a few requirements short to still log a Note of their progress in each Subject so that we can see what you have achieved.

This cache was inspired by the BeltFamily’s BGSc 101 Contain Hers (Nelson/Marlborough), GC2GDET.

CONGRATULATIONS to Marcus Vitruvius, getting a FTF before the Event, and CONGRATS to the crew that went up on Saturday - pprass has already had a qualified note, so in a way he beat Marcus' log entry!
