Geocache Description:

The River Crouch occupies a shallow valley between two ridges of London Clay.

The intertidal zone along the river is 'squeezed' between the sea walls on both banks and the river channel. This leaves a relatively narrow strip of tidal mud in contrast with other estuaries in the county.

All Geocaches in the SSSI are placed within a couple of metres of the public footpath so you do not need to extend your search further than this.

No Geocaches are placed in habitats which are sensitive to trampling or other disturbance, in particular there are two types of habitat which are close to your route i.e. salt marsh and shingle plant communities which are both special interest features of the SSSI and are to be avoided.

To minimise disturbance to birds in the SSSI, you must keep dogs under control and on a lead when in or near habitats likely to support ground-nesting birds including salt marsh, grazing marsh and shingle.

At several points along the Crouch the SSSI includes pasture and grazing marsh on the landward side of the seawall, as well as the seawall itself and salt marsh and mudflats on the seaward side. It is particularly important that you do not search away from the route of the public footpath in these areas (and keep dogs under control) to avoid disturbing livestock and overwintering or breeding birds.
