Geocache Description:

A Watershed Approach For The Rivanna.......This Stream Restoration Project Is Protecting The Rivanna River

Park Open Dawn to Dusk....Gate is Locked at Dark....

The land you are standing on was once pristine with tall trees and gentle creeks flowing into a clean and clear Rivanna River. The streams supported an abundance of wildlife that relied on healthy water to thrive. Over time trees were cleared from the land for farms fields and other uses. With fewer trees, less rain soaked into the ground. There was more EROSION from the open land and runoff to the river.

When communities grew and sites developed, we did not understand how cutting trees and paving the land would impact our waterways. We focused on moving water off the site as quickly as possible. Water that flows across rooftops, parking lots and roadways pick up pollutants, such as sediment, excessive nitrogen and phosphorus, bacteria, oil and grease and other harmful substances.

Instead of slowly soaking in and recharging the groundwater, this stormwater rushes quickly downstream, eroding stream banks and harming the stream ecosystem. Now we are learning how to better manage stormwater. Slowing it down, spreading it out and allowing it to soak in is one way. Collecting and using stormwater on-site is another method. These approaches improve water quality and reduce stress on streams and rivers. The results are healthier local streams, a healthier Rivanna River, and a healthier Chesapeake Bay!!!!!

In order to log this earthcache.....Please email your answers to the following questons to me(Do Not post answers in your log or it will be deleted) Feel free to go ahead and log the cache prior to the email :)

1. At the information sign close to the posted cooridinates whom assisted the park in their master plan for the control of stormwater?

2. Of the three(3) ways listed on the information sign to control stormwater runoff in this park do you see the most prominent and why?

3. What is mentioned in the information sign to the NE of it that is a key component in erosion control and what is it's purpose?

4. Please post a picture of you, your group or GPS with the stream in the background.......(Optional)

Thank you for visiting Greene County Community Park.....Hope you learned a little more about what is being done to protect our environment!!!!!
