                             Património Mundial Natural

A Laurissilva da Madeira constitui o remanescente de um coberto florestal primitivo cuja origem remonta ao Período Terciário. Ocupa atualmente cerca de 15.000 hectares (20% do total da ilha), principalmente nas encostas viradas a Norte, representando a mais extensa e bem conservada floresta de lauráceas das ilhas atlânticas. Integra o Parque Natural da Madeira e ascendeu à qualidade de Património Mundial da UNESCO em dezembro de 1999.

🌱 Flora e Fauna Endémica: Apresenta um aspeto perene e luxuriante ao longo de todo o ano. Entre as grandes árvores da família das Lauráceas, destacam-se o Til, o Vinhático, o Loureiro e o Barbusano. É o lar do endémico Tentilhão da Madeira (Fringilla coelebs maderensis) e de centenas de moluscos e insetos raros. As humidades trazidas pelos ventos de Nordeste são retidas por esta "floresta produtora de água", alimentando as nossas levadas, centrais hidroelétricas e os campos de cultivo.

                          UNESCO World Natural Heritage

The Laurissilva of Madeira conserves the largest surviving area of primary laurel forest, a vegetation type whose origins date back to the Tertiary Era. Covering roughly 15,000 hectares (20% of the island), it drapes the steep, rugged slopes of the north coast. Protected inside the Madeira Natural Park, this undisturbed ecosystem was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in December 1999.

🌱 Endemic Biodiversity: The forest is comprised of majestic evergreen trees belonging to the Lauraceae family, dominated by the Til, the Barbusano, the Laurel, and the Vinhático. This sanctuary provides vital ecological niches for species like the Madeiran Chaffinch and the rare Trocaz Pigeon. The forest plays a predominant role in the island's hydrological balance, capturing moisture from trade winds to feed the historical network of water channels known as levadas.
