                 👻 A Lagoa e a Lenda do Inglês

               🌲 Biodiversidade e a Laurissilva

                        History and Natural Heritage

🛠️ The Levadas Engineering (Year 1835)

"Levadas" are unique open irrigation channels carved stone by stone by past generations to channel water from the wet North to the dry agricultural fields of the South. The construction of this levada began in 1835, and on September 16, 1855, water flowed through it for the very first time. Today, it collects water from Ribeira Grande, powering the Calheta Hydroelectric Plant before irrigating the local farmlands.

👻 The Lagoon and the Legend of the Englishman

Following the PR 6 trail, you will reach the majestic 25 Fontes Lagoon. Formed by waters descending from the Paul da Serra plateau, it seeps out beautifully through the mossy cliffside wall. Local superstition warned that anyone who dared to dive into this pool would disappear forever. According to legend, an Englishman tried to challenge this myth, jumped into the deep lagoon, and was never seen again.

🌲 Biodiversity and the Laurissilva Forest

Above 1000 meters high, the landscape is dominated by high-altitude heather, including tree heath (Erica arborea) and Madeira blueberry. As you descend, the vegetation shifts into the UNESCO-protected Laurissilva Forest (Natura 2000). Keep an eye out for the extremely rare Mocano-da-serra tree and the iconic Trocaz Pigeon, a bird species unique to Madeira that nests in these valleys.
