Trail Building on the CT Cache In Trash Out® Event

This cache has been archived.

Fugads: Due to recent rains and forecasted rains for the day of the event, the ranger has cancelled trailbuilding for Dec 6th. Bummer. Turns out, even though I was the only geocacher to sign up for the CITO, there were 15 other volunteers that were going to be there. Would have been fun, I'll see if I can't set something up for a different date.

Geocache Description:

Help build the Cumberland Trail in Campbell County. If you love hiking on the Cumberland Trail, this is a great chance to help build the trail and work towards completing a section in Cambell County.

I have been hiking bits of the Cumberland Trail since moving to the area and it is a fantastic way to explore the natural beauty of the area. The trail offers access to beautiful waterfalls, intriguing rock formations and wilderness solitude. So when I heard there were opportunities to help construct more of the trail, I wanted in. Mark Stanfill from the Cumberland Trail Rangers Office is leading some volunteer days in November and December and after speaking with him, he would love to see geocachers turn out to help build trail. Let's turn out and show him what we can do!

Participants will be building new trail in Campbell County. Volunteers will meet at the Cumberland Trail park office at 9:00am for an orientation/safety meeting. We will drive to the trail head, hike to the worksite and return to the park office by 4:00 - 4:30pm. You must bring lunch & water since this is manual work and you will be out most of the day. A 32oz water bottle or two store bought waters will be good. You will also need to wear long pants, dress in layers, have a sleeve & rain jacket, gloves and closed toe shoes, no sandals. The park will supply all tools and gloves if needed.

Directions: From Knoxville take I-75 north to Exit#134. Drive 0.7 miles to first left just past the Cove Lake State Park Office. Take Park Road and drive 0.2 miles. Cumberland Trail Office is house on the right.

Volunteer Day may be rescheduled or cancelled due to weather.

* You must pre-register/contact the park to know you are volunteering that day. Contact Mark Stanfill, mark.stanfill@tn.gov, (423)-566-2229

*  Due to the nature of the work participants will not be able to meet us later in the day or leave early but must plan day according to designated time. We may return earlier and weather could change plans.
* Have positive attitude and be ready to dig some trail!
