Historical data show us that the town of Prijedor has been created on the artificial island, used to be called "Svinjarica" and today known as The old town. It is located not far away from the main bridge on the river Sana and it is formed by the channel Berek, orbiting The Old Town and reconnecting with the river about half a kilometer further down its course. The canal has been dug while the original earthen fortification still existed and the reasons were defensive. The river Sana used to be navigable and at that time the Berek served for 'parking' river galleys and from there to the Sava river, and evan fruther away, they were dragged upstream, by the strong "Galijas" people, who`d tie ropes to their own backs and move along the banks of the river. Today this area is one of the most beautiful areas in the city, characterized by the beautiful nature and the houses built in the traditional Bosnian style.
