Geocache Description:

This walk takes in some sites of former public houses in Reigate.

I was inspired to set this cache up when dropping my wife at her workplace, and noticing the name of one of the nearby houses. A quick internet search and I stumbled on a useful resource to aid me in it's formulation. There were many places to chose from but I have tried to pick locations where I can find some history, or evidence of the buildings previous incarnation and something to use for figures!

There is no need to do the walk in the order listed. There is a small chance of on street parking near the first stage but plenty in the town centre.

First Stage - Posted co-ordinates (& inspiration!)

This site was formerly The Warren Arms until c1914, then a slaughterhouse, shop and private residence. Just over the road is a sign on the wall of the house. There is a date 18A9.

Stage 2 - 14.500 12.012

46 Holmesdale Road was formerly The Robin Hood, and closed in 1936. What "Old Shop" is opposite? Number of letters = B

Stage 3 - 14.456 11.772

48 Croydon Road. The Eagle Hotel. Closed in 1956 and now demolished. What is the height limit on the railway bridge? 1C'D"

Stage 4 - 14.270 12.285

12 Church St. This was The White Hart until 2007. I remember drinking here.... Carefully cross the road and look back and up the building. There is a semi circular window with E number of panes of glass

Stage 5 - 14.192 12.318

37 Bell St. Site of The Ship. This pub had been converted to a house by 1785. The eatery next door to the current no 37 has a date on it 185F

Stage 6 - 14.096 12.256

85 Bell St. Formerly The Castle, then The Priory, this was built on the site of The Gamekeeper Alehouse. I have also drunk here.... Looking over at the site, look along Bell St to your left and you should see two dates on nearby properties 1G15 & 190H

Stage 7 - 14.237 12.335

Formerly The Bricklayers Arms, The Bunch of Grapes and latterly the Grapes until c1910. You can see a lamp outside (and hopefully this will survive development) and a date 188J. Should the lamp go there is a date on building opposite and left 19J7

Stage 8 - 14.267 12.432

This is an alley at the side of the former Greyhound (32 High St) until it was converted to retail at the end of the 17th Century. If you look at the side of the building you will see the timber framing. Opposite is info about the castle & grounds. How many centuries are mentioned? K

Stage 9 - 14.352 12.664

The Nutley Hall. Now converted to houses but pretty much still the same building from the outside! I had (too) many long lunch breaks in here when I worked in Reigate. Closed 2013. There are some lamps from the brewery. The initials are the Lth and Mth letters of the alphabet.

Stage 10 - 14.385 12.674

32 Nutley Lane. For just over 100 years this was The Prince of Wales. There is a big green box to the side of it. The numbers 653N9.
