01 / THE PLACE
A court built around water

The Court of the Lions is part of the Nasrid Palaces at the Alhambra in Granada. The palace was built during the second reign of Muhammad V (1362–1391). The rectangular court is surrounded by an arcade of 124 white Macael marble columns. At its centre stands the fountain from which it takes its name: a large basin apparently supported by twelve sculpted lions.

The fountain belongs to a water system that carries water from nearby rooms along channels converging at the court. Its paving has changed several times. Documentary research established that the court had white marble paving by the late 15th century; a project completed in 2012 restored a Macael marble pavement.

02 / GEOLOGY

MACAEL MARBLE

Marble is a metamorphic rock: heat and pressure cause older carbonate rocks to recrystallise without melting. Limestone is a sedimentary rock; metamorphism can turn it into calcite marble.

From limestone to calcite marble · conceptual diagra

The marble used comes from Macael, in Almería. Marble from its quarries has been used since 2700 BC, and they are among the most important in Spain. It comes in several varieties. White Macael and Grey Macael consist mainly of calcite; some yellow varieties consist mainly of dolomite. Accessory minerals can create bands and variations in colour. Polishing gives the stone a shine, but colour and veining alone cannot establish the origin of a piece.

The Alhambra authority identifies white Macael marble in the columns, the twelve lions and the large fountain basin.

The lions and basin date from the 14th century. Their blocks and natural veining were examined during restoration; conservation work on the fountain and renewal of the paving took place in stages up to 2012.
