San Antonio de Lipez

The information on the place itself is very thin and contradictory. Every guide here seems to invent his own story. On the one hand, we were told that the Incas were already here, and in the next sentence, that the Spaniards settled here first after the conquest.

The reason people settled on over 4.600m was gold, silver and copper. This was, like in Potosi still today, quarried in narrow mines by individual mining workers. The ores were then crushed by hand between basalt. In some houses these stones can still be found. The gold was then washed out.

There are various myths about the abandoning of the place. A pact with the devil, which was not fullfilled, gases in the shafts and simply the lack of profitability. You may decide which version you like most. It seems certain that the place was abandoned by the last inhabitants in 1960.

Deposits of gold

In general, gold deposits are divided into primary and secondary depostis.
  • Primary: Identifies deposit in which gold is traditionally embedded in quartz veins. Especially quartz veins are able to concentrate gold by their formation as intrusive hypothermal liquid. The 300°-600° hot fluids rise in the earth's crust, some minerals being more mobilized in the solution than others, forming the typical quartz veins.
  • Secondary: Gold deposits deposited by erosion and weathering over millions of years, the so-called secondary deposits. As a rule, the rock is normally eroded by water and washed away. Together with other heavy minerals, it settles in rivers and streams, through the currents it deposits at suitable places. These deposits are an indicator for the primary deposit, if not already completely removed.
