Una chiesetta privata Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

I reluctantly ask for this cache to be archived as those who live near it, while not boasting any ownership of the place where it is hidden, continue to discourage geocachers from looking for it and moving them away. I think it is better to clear the field and leave room for other caches, in places where hopefully they will be better received.

Geocache Description:

The small church of Saint Valentine is believed to have been built in 1686 (as indicated by the inscription on the support beam) by the Confraternita dei Battuti, which had been active in Pordenone since 1300 and was abolished by Napoleon in 1808. After climbing the nine steps that lead to the vestibulum with its six arched openings, it is possible to admire the fresco overlooking the entrance that depicts Mary who, under her ample blue coat, protects the devoted kneeling at her feet. By her side, there are Saint Valentine and Saint Florian or Saint Rocco. On the inside the little church boasts a panelled ceiling and frescoed walls.
In 1808 the church became privately owned and was included in the premises of the neighbouring Villa Poletti before being sold to the Marchi family in 1929.
After being damaged during the First World War, it was also hit by a bomb in the Second World War, which killed 21 people. The street it is on, which is the ancient route that through the gravel road of the Meduna river led to Germany, was named after the little church.
On the 14th of February of every year the neighbourhood of the church hosts the "sagra delle arance" (festival of the oranges). The night before the celebrations every family puts on display a burning candle on their window sill. It is one of the most ancient celebrations of the city and the first one of the year.
