Geocache Description:

Kent Classic Rally Roads #1 – “The Hucking 90’s”

This series of puzzle caches allows me to combine my two hobbies, Road Rallying and Geocaching.

There has been a rich history of road rallying in Kent, and indeed, all over the UK for decades. Late at night, when most people are tucked up in their beds the local motor clubs come out to play. You probably wouldn’t even realise these events take place, unless you’re lucky enough to live along one of the quiet country lanes that happen to be on the route. Even then, you’d probably only know about it because of the public relations letter that landed on your doorstep in the weeks prior to the event starting. There are a few sections of Kentish lanes that get used fairly regularly for road rallies, this series of caches is a celebration of those roads.

The Hucking 90’s

This section of Broad Street Hill is one of those classic rally roads.

For ease, and speed of communication with their driver, rally navigators commonly call right angle bends “90’s”, due to them being 90 degrees. The "Hucking 90’s” is so called because of the four right angle bends in very quick succession, and their proximity to the Hucking Estate.

To solve this puzzle you will require two pieces of vital rally navigator’s equipment-

  • A map – Ordnance Survey Landranger 188, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells.
  • A Roamer – If you don’t already own a roamer, they can be purchased cheaply from good outdoor shops or the internet. Some compasses have roamers on them. If all else fails you can make one. All you need is a small piece of thin card (it must have a right angle corner) such as a post card or business card. Place the corner of the card along the scale on the map, and copy the tenth of a kilometre marks onto both edges of the corner of the card.

I’ll let you figure out the rest, while you do, imagine doing it in the dark, in a moving car, whilst simultaneously giving your driver directions. Welcome to world of the road rally navigator, best of luck!
