This cache is located in one of the military trenches on Black Down. This trench, which is most likely a training firing point for infantry troops, forms part of the wider landscape of military remains around 'F' Range. Associated with this short section of trench is another five short sections of trenches located on both the south and north slopes of Black Down. A number of these are visible on satellite view, and are well worth an investigation.
The six trenches consists of two type of trenches, traversed infantry redoubts and mortar positions. Although there is not sufficient evidence to attribute a firm date on their construction, based on aerial photographs (1947) it appears that they were freshly dug in the mid 20th century. Based on this evidence, and troop bases at the time, it is probable that these are related to the American Armed Forces' occupation of the range in the lead up to D-day.
