St Michael & All Angels - Martin Hussingtree

This grade 1 listed church dates back to the 13th Century. The name of Martin Hussingtree has evolved from two Saxon manors of Meretun, (‘farmstead’ or ‘estate by the boundary’) and Husa’s Tree (the old English person’s name of ‘Husa’)
Inside, near the organ, a plaque commemorates Thomas Tompkyns who was the Composer and Organist at Worcester Cathedral from 1596 to 1649. During the Civil War in 1649 Oliver Cromwell closed the Cathedral down and Thomas retired to live with his son Nathaniel, at nearby Martin Court. Thomas Tompkyns was buried in the churchyard on 9th June 1656. In 1612 Tomkins oversaw the construction in Worcester cathedral of a magnificent new organ by Thomas Dallam, the foremost organ-builder of the day.
