Levi Jackson was born in Tennessee on March 17, 1816 and was one of the first pioneers to settle in Kentucky. His parents had come to Kentucky around the time of Laurel County’s establishment in 1825 and established a mill on the Laurel River.
John Freeman, whose grave is located at the bottom of the hill, arrived in Kentucky in 1802 and claimed an extensive tract of land bordering the Wilderness Road as payment for his Revolutionary War service. Freeman built a large house that he licensed as a tavern in 1803.
Jackson married Freeman’s daughter, Rebecca, in 1937. The two men became partners and ran the Wilderness Road Tavern and the Laurel River Post Office.
When the Kentucky legislature established the office of County Judge in 1850, Levi was elected as the first person to hold that office and served three terms. He remained in local politics until his death on July 17, 1879. Also buried in the cemetery are Levi’s wife and children.
The surrounding area became known as “Jackson’s Farm” and remained in the Jackson family until 1931, when his descendants donated 307 acres to establish a state park.
