A traditional cache located on a footpath just beyond a quaint little bridge in the village of Stogursey.
The source of the leat is a weir on the Stogursey Brook and it then runs across farmland for almost a kilometre to supply the moat of Stogursey Castle. The castle is one of around 600 Norman motte and bailey castles that survive within the British landscape. An exact date of construction is unknown but there is a reference to the castle during the reign of King John in 1215. The castle was ruined in 1459 during the Wars of the Roses and a cottage was built on the site fairly soon afterwards. The cottage survives today in private hands.
The moat was reused as a mill pond for Stogursey Mill and allows a good head of water to be maintained across a relatively flat landscape. With the sluice open the water would run along and under the footpath to the mill. The waterwheel would power machinery used to grind cereals before being discharged back in to the SStogursey Brook where it would make its way north to the Bristol Channel. Stogursey Mill survives to this day and I am led to believe there is still a large amount of old mill machinery within the building.
The cache is a flip top pill pot hidden just beyond the castle. You do not need to leave the path to find it. My recommendation is to examine the metal kissing gate!
The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast. There is a stats listing run by Billiethecat, so you can see how many Little Bridges you have found, you can find it here:- https://littlebridgesseries.wordpress.com/ . If you would like to add to the series, please contact Stan on stanthews@aol.com and he will give you a number for your bridge, to qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles, please make sure your title exactly matches "Little Bridges # xxxx then the name" including spaces so it will get picked up and added to stats list.
