To get to this cache find your way to LibDocAbq’s “North-South Crest View” cache, and simply take the easy walk up the ridge (the scenic route hugs the western edge of the cliffs). You can walk on rocks much of the way to avoid damaging vegetation.
From a great distance it appears the Madera limestone rests directly on the Sandia Granite, but it does not. Above the Unconformity sits the thinner Sandia Formation (not to be confused with the Sandia Granite); this is a sedimentary rock, which includes sandstones, shales and conglomerates, as well as some limestone. The base of the Madera is “typically placed at the first massive marine limestone bed above the shales of the Sandia Formation (Wikipedia.org): this could be a clue for roughly identifying the contact from a moderate distance in the field.
Congratulations to ZenGuru, Budabeli & Thoehn for their co-FTF !
