Geocache Description:

Good day Class and welcome to Music 101. I'm your instructor, Doctor Professor Goalie. I'm happy to see so many faces eager to learn about the wonderful world of music. Before we get started I just wanted to point out that I don't believe in syllabi and so you won't be getting one. Grades? I'll let you know when it's relevant. Just know that there will be a quiz at the end of each lesson and passing each quiz is crucial to passing the final. Now then, let's get started.

Lesson 1 will be on counting notes per measure. Now, what is a measure? A measure is referred to as a bar and the technical definition: a segment of time corresponding to a specific number of beats in which each beat is represented by a particular note value and the boundaries of the bar are indicated by vertical bar lines. In English, it is simply where the notes go in a song and are broken up based on how many notes can go inside it.

This is what a measure looks like:

Now there are numbers to the left of the measure. That is called a Time Signature. The most basic time signature is 4/4. The top number indicates how many beats are in a measure while the bottom number indicates what type of note is counted as 1 full beat. So in 4/4, there are 4 beats per measure, and a quarter note is 1 beat. That means that 4 quarter notes will fill the measure. Likewise, an Eighth note, which is double a quarter note, can fill a measure with 8 notes because an Eighth note is counted as half a beat.

Pre quiz practice: For the quiz, you will be counting the number of playable notes in each measure. I have attached some practice for you to check to see if you understand the lesson. The answers will be attached separately as "pre-quiz answers" and you can check to see how you did.

All done with the pre-quiz practice? Great. Now it's time for the quiz. This is an open book quiz so you can use any tools to help you get the correct answers so do your best. If you decide to ask your classmates for help just be courteous and keep your voices to a low whisper.

Quiz: Count the playable notes in each measure. The north coordinates will be the 1st 7 measures followed by a break. The measures following the break are the west coordinates. All coordinates are read from left to right.

Note: Parking can be found on Brooklawn drive right in front of the trailhead. DO NOT park at the elementary school
