Just East of I-15 on Pomerado Road in Scripps Ranch, you plunge into Eucalypus forest for the next 5 miles or so. Some trees are young, some are quite old, some are healthy, some not. Many unfortunately have been cleared for encroaching development. Nonetheless they are quite beautiful and, even if our community motto “Country Living” is a bit of a stretch these days, it seems to fit in this suburban canyon.
There are many miles of hiking/biking trails here on both sides of Pomerado Road. These trails are well maintained, the terrain is easy to moderate, and the scenery is surprisingly varied.
This five waypoint multicache will require you to traverse about three miles of these trails before arriving at the cache site. Perfect for a family outing but challenging enough for the seasoned geocacher. Park at Jerabek Park on Avenida Magnifica. The trailhead is across the street at N 32 54.716, W 117 04.791.
The waypoints are:
Stumped N 32 54.982, W 117 04.357
– follow a little brook during rainy season.
Doctor’s N 32 55.006, W 117 03.9X1
– the local Boy Scouts maintain this trail.
Rebirth N 32 54.525, W 117 04.X98
– the near the site of a June 2002 brush fire.
Opuntia N 32 54.346, W 117 04.X80
– it can get a little prickly thru here.
Giant N 32 54.X28, W 117 05.X89
- See UPDATE below
But wait! These coordinates are not complete! What are all those X’s? Hmmmmm. It’s a good thing that each missing digit is posted at the previous waypoint. For example, the missing digit in the Doctor’s waypoint can be found at the Stumped waypoint. Just find the missing number, punch the complete coordinates into your GPS, and press on. The missing digits are in plain sight (although they get progressively harder to find).
UPDATE (7/30/03): At the last waypoint, you need two more clues to find the cache. Hop in! I'll drive! What's this number in front of me? I'll add it to the current North coordinate. And you found a number, too? Add it to the current West coordinate. Now let's go find the cache! It's not far now.
The cache itself is a medium-sized tupper stocked with a variety of goodies from toys to tools.
The fastest way back to Jerabek Park should be obvious. But if you are turned around, use the trailhead waypoint your GPS will help you complete the loop. Don’t go back the way you came!
The terrain rating of 2 is due to the length of the hike and a few steep hills. The difficulty is 3.5 simply due to the number of things you will have to find. When logging this cache, please don’t post the numbers even if encrypted.
