Constructed in 2015, the Mill Creek Wetlands project transformed a fallow, underutilized area within the Prado Basin (a major US Army Corps of Engineers flood control facility) into a natural water quality treatment system. Its Native Habitat Plan created several planting zones that continue to benefit local wildlife, including endangered species, by utilizing plants that promote nesting, breeding and foraging.
The project provides environmental and recreational benefits while improving groundwater quality for downstream water users. The 52-acre park offers nature trails, educational exhibits, and a picnic area. Although the parking lot is only open during daylight hours (take care not to get locked in), we were told by security that the public is welcome to park outside the gate and walk in at any time.
Congrats to ganseyiii for FTF!
